The life of a real estate agent is glamorised in the media, but is it really as good as they make it out to be? A career as a sales agent can be rewarding- both financially and personally. You get to meet new people everyday, explore new properties and make lifelong connections with people. However, like every job, it comes with unique challenges and struggles. It takes a certain type of person to have a successful career in real estate, and it’s important to determine if you hit the mark before you even interview for jobs. Here’s 5 things to consider about yourself before making the leap into real estate:

1. Do you like talking to people?

We don’t just mean small talk… we mean REALLY talking. Real estate agents make hundreds of phone calls every week to try and procure properties, build relationships, network, liaise with buyers and sellers and engage and communicate with people. Personality, charm, and charisma are all part of the job description of being a real estate agent. To be successful, you must communicate regularly and well with people.

2. Are you a good listener?

While being a good talker is incredibly important, so are your listening skills! Clients like to feel heard and it’s your responsibility to make sure their needs and special requests are met. As an agent, you need to understand what your buyers and sellers are looking for and make plans on how to accommodate those wishes. You can’t do the best job possible if you’re not listening well!

3. Are you self-motivated?

For a successful career in real estate, you must be a highly motivated individual who likes to get things done. It’s no secret you have to work extremely hard to make it in real estate. As it’s such a demanding and independent role, you have to be goal orientated and motivated to make it far. The harder an agent works, the greater reward they will likely receive.

4. Are you organised?

When liaising with a number of buyers and sellers at the same time, it is paramount to ensure you remain organised at all times. Between open homes, phone calls and meeting with clients, it can be easy to forget an important task. Forgetting a task could mean losing a prospect or disappointing a seller. Stay organised to keep everyone happy!

5. Do you love property?

Of course, a passion for property is extremely important too. How can you sell something if you don’t love it yourself? Most real estate agents LOVE what they do, and love seeing new properties everyday.

If you answered “YES!” to all five of these questions, congratulations, you’ll probably make a great sales agent. Think about why you want to work in real estate, what type of houses you would like to sell and what motivates you. Work hard, and you’ll make it far!

If you answered no, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of ways you can dip your toes into real estate life. Maybe you would better enjoy property managing, or maybe the administrative side of it. You might even like the marketing and social media promotion factors more!
